Yes, she’s done it! After months of training and hard work, our marathoner, Teh U Mei has successfully completed the 32nd edition of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon which was held on 19 March.
She finished in 5 hours and 27 minutes – with good fun of course!
“The stadium-to-the-sea course – from the Dodger stadium across the city of Los Angeles to a scenic finish just steps away from the Santa Monica Pier – was beautiful.
“I stopped to take photos with all the participants and bands who put on a fantastic show for the runners. How could I possibly ignore them? It was a super, well-organised event and one to remember. The cut off time for the marathon was 6 hours 30 minutes,” she says.
Nearly 24,000 participants from all 50 states in the US and 63 countries participated in the race.
“We had a welcome reception where we met international runners as well as the chief operating officer/ chief financial officer of Skechers USA, David Weinberg, Skechers USA marketing manager Jeffrey Weinberg and the rest from the organisation.
“On the day of the marathon, we were shuttled at 5am to the Dodger Stadium where we given VIP treatment – breakfast at the VIP suite before the race. There were plenty of photo opportunities here too,” adds Mei.
In the end, only 20,000 participants completed the race (out of 24,000). Kenyans Elisha Barno and Hellen Jepkurgat won the men’s and women’s fields with 2:11:52 and 2:34:23 respectively.
Eight athletes set official Guinness World Records while recording the fastest-ever time running a marathon dressed in costumes ranging from a boxer, a tennis player, a swimmer and a flamingo.
To make these historic moments even more memorable, a Guinness World Records adjudicator was on-site to provide record-breakers with on-the-day verification. The LA Chargers fielded a 13-person relay team which included players, staff, fans and general manager Tom Telesco.
The run also had celebrity participation with actor Zach Gilford (known for playing Matt Saracen on ‘Friday Night Lights’), singer Jordin Sparks, three-times Olympic gold medalist swimmer Rebecca Soni and FOX Sports TV host Charissa Thompson.
Look out for Mei’s full experience of the marathon in an upcoming issue of SHAPE Malaysia!
