For years this reader struggled with obesity, depression, and type 2 diabetes. Now, at 42, she’s in the best shape of her life.
Dawn was always a bit heavy, but she didn’t think much about her weight. After giving birth to her second child and losing her mother to cancer in one year, she got depressed, and her weight ballooned. At her next doctor’s visit, she weighed 126 kilograms.
MY REALITY CHECK
Dawn knew that her weight was harming her health when her doctor told her that she’d also developed type 2 diabetes. “I was almost 40, and my mother, two aunts, and grandmother—who were overweight—all died at age 52,” says Dawn. “I knew that if I didn’t do something, I might not live to see my kids grow up.” She booked an appointment with a nutritionist immediately.
