When it comes to safety, Arif’s main concern is heart health.

“Safety is the main concern in these races. Go for a full health checkup before starting and do it annually. I used to go for heart checkups every year. Then I stopped for a while and started again this year. There’s a lot of stress to the heart in this sport. We’re constantly running at about 80% – 90% of our max heart rates. When we do high intensity training we may even exceed our max heart rates. And when we’re training for three sports, we push the limits of our heart rates, which is also why rest and recovery days are very important. It’s to let the heart and muscles rebuild and get stronger.”
