Most chocolate lovers know that their favourite indulgence can be beneficial to the cardiovascular system – and certainly to one’s mood – but good for your figure as well? That’s exactly what a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests, as it found that adults who regularly ate cacao-based treats weighed less than those who had them infrequently.
Even more unexpected: they maintained their slimmer frames despite consuming more calories than the non-chocolate-eaters and having similar exercise habits. The substance may cause a metabolic boost in the body that offsets the added intake, explains lead author Beatrice Golomb, M.D., Ph.D, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego. So go ahead, enjoy a few squares of dark chocolate and you just might get a shock when you hop on the scale.
