• WHAT DOES A 60KG+ WOMAN REALLY LOOK LIKE?

No, it’s not cool to body-shame anyone. It’s a kind of bullying too. And that’s a reason why we kicked off the #shapeproud body-confidence campaign in January 2017. At SHAPE, we encourage women to not just eat healthily, keep active and to look after yourself, but we also want you to embrace and love the body that you’re in.

The recent body-shaming at a fashion show by fashion stylist Zaihani M Zain who, on her social media had said that sitting next to a plus-sized person (with bodyweight over 60kg) whose thighs were spilling over left and right was “awkward and uncomfortable”isn’t cool either.  (Also, read about how our deputy editor reacted when she was body-shamed).

Sixty kilos or not, don’t let the scale rule you. A study in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior found that women who weigh themselves more often are also more likely to be concerned with their own weight, have a more negative body image, lower self-esteem, and higher likelihood of depression.

“It only tells you your relationship with gravity. It cannot dictate happiness, success, or self-worth,” says dietitian Alexandra Caspero.  Plus, the scale doesn’t really tell you all that much about your health. “If a client is obese, I can make that distinction without an exact number,” she adds. Between requirements at the doctor’s office and the temptation in the gym locker room, though, sometimes you just want to know what your number is. And that’s totally okay.

These fabulous women are definitely more than 60kg, and rocking it. Check them out!
