• Reem Shahwa Talks Football and More

If you like sports, chances are you’ve glimpsed Reem Shahwa, a TV presenter for Astro SuperSport’s travel show WISHLIST, and the SuperSport Daily news programme. We sat her down to find out how she came to be working on her dream job.

What excites you the most about sports broadcasting? “I’ve always had a passion for sports and telling stories, so, combining the two only seemed natural. Being right in the thick of the action, with thousands of other fans at the edge of their seats especially in a sport like football, there’s nothing quite like it.”

What is your most unforgettable moment? “I must say it was the time when I was asked to do reporting for LFC TV, the club I’ve supported since I was 10 years old. It’s definitely a dream come true! I got to interview the players and then watch a game at Anfield while singing You’ll Never Walk Alone with over 40,000 fans.”

The best sports coverage you’ve ever done? “The 2014 World Cup in Brazil!”

What’s your fitness routine like? “I like to mix it up because I get bored easily, although Bodytone or circuit training, in general, has the best results for my body, so I tend to stick with that.”

Your favourite sports? “Football (of course!). Aside from it being exciting to watch, what goes on off the pitch is just as interesting – the traditions, culture, rivalries and the solidarity of the fans – no other sport compares to it.”

What’s your version of a healthy diet? “Eat everything in moderation! It’s really a balancing act. If you have a slice of cake in the afternoon, have a salad for dinner and tell yourself you’re not allowed to have any dessert any time soon, unless you get a work out in. There’s no point in suppressing your cravings because that will only make you want it more, which will lead to a binge. Try to find the healthiest version of that thing you crave, eat a small portion and then move on.”

Do you have any fitness goals? “I think I have a similar build to Kayla Itsines, although nowhere near quite as lean and fit so I’d like to achieve her body type ideally.”

Who inspires you?Fit girls everywhere inspire me! I’m always scrolling through the feeds of fit girls on Instagram and this is enough motivation to get me to the gym on a day I don’t feel like working out.”

How do you spend your weekends? “Getting in at least one workout, cook a nice meal and running errands I don’t usually get around to over the week.”

Your favourite quotes? “I can understand wanting to have millions of dollars, there’s a certain freedom, meaningful freedom, that comes with that. But once you get much beyond that, I have to tell you, it’s the same hamburger” – Bill Gates. To me, we’re all guilty of being driven by material goods but once you get what you’ve always wanted, the novelty wears off. That’s because things only provide momentary bursts of happiness. To be happier, don’t chase as many things. Chase experiences!”
